Apple's iTunes online music store has surpassed Wal-Mart Stores to become the biggest music retailer in America, a report finds.
According to market research company NPD, iTunes overtook Wal-Mart in January and February on the basis that 12 downloads are considered equal to the sale of one CD album.
iTunes, which was launched in the US in April 2003, now has more than 50 million customers.
The service is available in over 20 countries, reaching an estimated 90 per cent of the global music market.
The site makes songs available for download for less than a £1 per track.
The success of iTunes can be attributed to the growing popularity of Apple's iconic iPod family.
Apple has sold over 50 million iPods since their introduction in October 2001, making it the most widely used digital music player on the market.
